The improvements to Berkhamsted Leisure Centre and Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre will be delivered in carefully planned phases. This approach will allow different areas of each centre to be improved at different times and where possible, help keep other facilities available while work is taking place.
The timeline below shows the key stages currently planned for each project.
Please note: Construction programmes can change as projects progress. We will keep this page updated and provide advance notice of any changes that affect customers.
Berkhamsted Leisure Centre

Design and preparation

Work begins on site
MARCH TO OCTOBER 2027
Phase 1
NOVEMBER 2027 TO MAY 2028
Phase 2
MAY TO JUNE 2028
Final Phase

Project complete
Phase 1
March – October 2027
The first major phase of improvements gets underway.
Work includes:
- Wet and dry changing facilities
- Circulation areas and fitness suite corridor
- Mechanical and electrical improvements
- Swimming pool – this area will be closed from March 2027 until November 2027.
- Sports hall – this area will be closed from November 2027 until May 2028.
Phase 2
November 2027 – May 2028
The second major phase includes improvements to:
- Fitness facilities
- Studios
- Refreshment area, offices and stores
- Entrance foyer and reception
- Changing facilities
- Internal circulation areas
Final Phase
May – June 2028
The final major construction work includes the installation of the new sports hall floor, alongside completion and commissioning activity.
Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre

Phase 1
May – October 2027
The first major phase includes improvements to:
- Dry changing facilities
- Circulation areas
- Mechanical and electrical services
- Sports hall – this area will be closed from May 2027 and will reopen in March 2029
Phase 2
November 2027 – November 2028
This is the largest phase of the Hemel Hempstead project and includes improvements to:
- Changing village
- Fitness area
- New studio area
- Circulation spaces
- Mechanical and electrical services
- Swimming pools – this area will be closed from November 2027 until February 2029.
During this phase, the sports hall is planned to be used as a temporary gym.
Final Phase
December 2028 – March 2029
The project moves into its final works, including the new sports hall floor, commissioning and completion activity.
